DECEMBER 2002

It was one of the best New Year’s Eve I have ever had. After travelling through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia; finally we arrived to Prague on 30.12.2002.

Prague:

Prague is one of the oldest European capitals that survived the world wars. Like most of capitals, Prague is a small world for itself and you will be surprised how it’s different from the other cities.

We stayed in Dlouha hostel (next to Roxy disco) which is very near to the city centre. Most important highlights of the city for me was walking across the river on Charles Bridge at night and the New Year’s Eve party in Old Town Square. The others would be the five floor night club at the end of Charles Bridge, famous Czech drinks (especially Pilsner and Becherovka) and the torture museum just before the bridge. Even though it seems like a strange place to spend an afternoon, the exhibits are quite interesting.

New Year’s Eve, you can go in and out of many pubs and cafes, but at midnight make sure you are in Old Town Square or on Charles Bridge to enjoy the crazy celebration!!

Imagine you are walking through the narrow streets of Prague, crossing the beautiful Old Town Square full of people despite freezing cold night. You have already been to a few pubs on the way and now drinking a glass of hot wine keeping you warm inside. It is New Year’s Eve, you have checked your hotel, had your dinner, you have got your party going on and feeling great……!!!

Suddenly, you feel like you are in hell!! Loud explosions fill the air, hundreds of fireworks (mostly aimed at right into the crowds) set off, champagne corks fly everywhere and people start cheering in different languages. Czech, Italian, German, English, Turkish and many more. When we finally found an open place to breathe, we thank God for not catching fire or being bit by a firework or a champagne cork.

After having a great New Year’s Eve, we will spend the first day of 2003 in another great city. We are off to Berlin!!!
